Vegan Interior Design Week

With increasing interest and awareness of more ethical living, it’s no surprise there is growing demand to apply the same level of thought and compassion to our homes, work places and buildings generally.

If you think about it, interior design choice is part of our every day and night. From the bed we sleep in (and the linen on it), through to the materials in the kitchen cupboards, furniture in the office, carpet in shops, light fittings and furnishings in cafes and restaurants, handles on doors, right through to the comfy cushions on the sofa we recline into at day’s end. All of these items mostly use animal products in their manufacture, and many use components which may have varying levels of toxicity embedded in them.

And now, very excitingly, the first Vegan Interior Design Week begins today as a celebration of ethical interior design.

As the world pivots quickly from the events of the last 2 years, it’s a perfect time to rethink how we want our world to be. New technological developments, a greater understanding of the impact on the environment (and animal welfare) from our rampant consumer demands, and a change of work/lifestyle wrought by the pandemic, have lead us to a point where we are more than ready to question if we can do things better. Which includes our interior design choices.

When + Where is it?

Running from November 1 - 5, the inaugural Vegan Interior Design Week features more than 40 industry leaders in the vegan and ethical design space. You can hear designers, manufactures, researchers and suppliers discuss the latest, future-focussed technologies and developments in this week long event.

Registration is not only free - but importantly, it isn’t a closed industry event. Hosted from Australia, it is open to everybody around the world. Cleverly, each day’s sessions are available online for 24 hours, so that all time zones can listen at their own pace.

What is it?

Aline Dürr is the founder of Vegan Design Week 21.
