Vegan & Vegetarian Food in Melbourne

Melbourne is a pretty amazing city for vegan food. There is a huge array of options to suit everybody's tastebuds, with more and more choices arising all the time.

You can find amazing vegan-friendly restaurants, cafes, bars, pubs, bakeries, raw food stores, ice-cream stores, donut shops, creperies, pizza joints, health food stores, food trucks and the list goes on!

Here is a list of just some of our favourite places.

Bakeries

  • Crumbs Organic Bakehouse : Sweet + savoury baked goods. Delicious pizza slices & berry danishes // Ascot Vale

  • Mister Nice Guys : Cupcakes, cakes, doughnuts, savoury baked goods & crazy milkshakes. 100% vegan // Ascot Vale

  • Fatto a Mano : Range of vegan pizza slices, filled rolls, pastries & cakes // Fitzroy

  • La Panella : Very reasonably priced sweet + savoury items, including croissants, doughnuts, slices, pies & sausage rolls. // Preston

  • V Series : Has a large selection of pretty little cupcakes. It is also a vegetarian cafe/restaurant. // Kew

  • Weirdoughs : Newly opened. Fine patisserie that’s all 100% vegan and a little wacky. // Flinders Lane, CBD


Brunch Cafes

  • Admiral Cheng-Ho : Vegetarian // Abbotsford

  • Matcha Mylkbar: Very 'instagramable', from the vegan poached 'eggs', to the green matcha pancakes and blue algae lattes. // St Kilda

  • Monk Bodhi Dharma : Vegetarian // Balaclava

  • Particle : A MUST visit. Possibly the best vegan cafe in Melbourne. They have 9 different plantmylks to select for your coffee or smoothie (including housemade almond, cashew, brazil nut, hazelnut & macadamia), the food is amazing and the owners are such lovely, dedicated people // Avondale Heights (worth trekking to)

  • Serotonin Dealer : Vegetarian. This eatery is on a mission to educate diners on living a happy lifestyle. The brunch items, raw desserts & drinks are yummy, but are a little pricey. // Burnley

  • Urban Projuice : One of our go-to brunch spots! The menu here is always creative, and most items are plant-based. [Read more in our review.]// Albert Park.

  • V Series : Great for brunch (we love their tofu benedict) and lunch (they even have bento boxes). On Fri + Sat nights they also serve dinner // Kew


Restaurants

  • Yong Green Food : One of our favourite restaurants in town! Mostly plant-based, and specialises in wholesome, nourishing dishes. [See our review here.] // Fitzroy

  • Vegie Bar : An all-vegetarian, Melbourne classic that's over 20 years old. The menu here is huge, so there is always something for everyone. //Fitzroy

  • Vegilicious : This restaurant also caters at many festivals, and we love their healthy, flavoursome food! // St Kilda

  • Sabas Ethiopian : Plenty of vegan options and super friendly staff // Fitzroy

  • Sister of Soul : Vegetarian. Yummy food and located right by the beach // St Kilda

  • Shakahari : Vegetarian. Great for special occasions // Carlton & South Melbourne

  • Smith & Daughters : This vegan restaurant is well known for a reason. Expect hearty food that's full of flavour. // Fitzroy

  • Transformer : Vegetarian. Great for special occasions. Run by the same owners as Vegie Bar // Fitzroy

  • Neko Neko : A modern Japanese restaurant, with a half vegan, half pescatarian menu. The food here is creative and beautifully presented. [Read more in our review] // Fitzroy

  • Red Sparrow : An entirely plant-based pizzeria, making delicious authentic wood-fired pizzas // Collingwood

  • Xenia Food Store : A Greek cafe and restaurant with a substantial range of traditional, vegan-friendly dishes. // Brunswick


For a Casual Meal

  • The Organic Food & Wine Deli [TOFWD] : Organic, wholesome food store right by Flinders Station. Our favourites are their healthy pies, bakes, burgers and salads. Also have a great range of vegan desserts. // Degraves Street, CBD.

  • Radhey Chai Bar : Great for food that's healthy, comforting, fast and affordable. All vegan. Also a great selection of chai and herbal teas. // Fitzroy

  • Tahina Bar : Healthy, delicious Israeli food. The falafel here are seriously good, as is the shakshuka (make it vegan by swapping the eggs for grilled eggplant). Another great thing about Tahini is that you can enjoy free pita, hummus & pickles while waiting for your order. // Northcote + Fitzroy

  • Mantra Lounge : a hare krishna cafe, located right near Melbourne University. A great place for a fast, healthy & affordable meal. // Carlton

  • Spud Bar : A baked potato chain with several vegan topping options. // Locations all around Melbourne

  • Rue de Creperie : a creperie with a substantial vegan menu (including both sweet + savoury crepes. // Fitzroy


For Raw Food (Savoury + Sweet)

  • Shoku Iku : Entirely raw + organic cafe, with a very creative menu. We went to a raw vegan dinner event here and were blown away by it! // Northcote

  • Raw Trader : Huge range of raw, vegan, gluten-free & refined-sugar free desserts // CBD.

  • Pana Chocolate : Chocolate unlike anything else. You can now buy their bars all over the world, but their flagship store also holds a cafe offering drinks, chocolates and other raw desserts // Richmond

  • Yong Green Food : This favourite restaurant of ours offers several raw dishes, including macadamia-based pizza, chia nachos and several desserts // Fitzroy

  • Cocomama's : All-raw + vegan cafe. Serves items like walnut 'meat' tacos, creamy kelp noodles and rainbow salads, as well as smoothie bowls, juices and desserts // Elsternwick

  • Simple Seed : Serves entirely plant-based, wholesome foods. Includes salads, smoothie bowls and incredible desserts // South Yarra

  • Combi : Range of raw savouries + sweets, including pizza, zucchini pasta, cheesecakes & smoothie bowls // Elwood

  • Sister of Soul : Offers items like raw lasagne, salads, breakfast bowls and some desserts // St Kilda

  • Casa Del Gelato: An iconic gelato bar that’s been run by the same family for nearly 40 years. They have a substantial amount of dairy-free options, including traditional sorbets and more inventive creamy soy-based flavours. // Lygon St, Carlton

  • Girls & Boys : A 100% vegan dessert bar, with super yummy gelato, soft-serve, smoothies, cakes, croissants & other desserts. // Fitzroy

  • Gojé : Plant-based, artisan-made, organic & refined sugar-free frozen desserts - all made from scratch. No wonder this place is so popular! // Yarraville

  • Gelato Messina : Large range of vegan sorbets, including dark chocolate // Several locations


Shopping

  • Vegan Style: a women’s + men’s fashion boutique that sells vegan shoes, handbags, accessories & skincare products. Not only is everything vegan, but it is also made ethically and is environmentally conscious. Their shoes are made mainly in Europe (Portugal, Spain, Italy, the UK) and in Brazil. // Fitzroy

  • Vegan Wares: another vegan shoe store. They also make some of their shoes themselves. Vegan Wares specialises in practical, comfortable shoes. // Collingwood

  • The Cruelty Free Shop: an all vegan supermarket, selling mainly packaged food, as well as household and beauty products. They also have a small range of fashion items. // Fitzroy
